Aspiring Booksellers

We are currently looking for our newest bookseller!

Please read the job description carefully! If this position sounds like something you would enjoy, complete the application and we'll look forward to meeting you-

This position is:

  • Part-Time (15-20 hours)
  • Long-term (NOT seasonal)
  • For those 18 years or older

As a KD’s bookseller, you will be responsible for helping customers select books on the sales floor, researching books, handling sales at the cash register, receiving shipments and entering inventory, shelving new books, processing online orders, tending to in-store maintenance to keep all areas of the store clean and attractive, and other duties as assigned.

The right candidate will be

  • Dependable: You can be relied on to work scheduled shifts, on time.
  • Flexible: Our schedule may vary at times; candidates must be available for at least some of our evening/weekend events, especially through the holiday season. Saturdays will be mandatory to begin; eventually you may work either Saturday or Sunday, but not both (unless you want to!). We try to be flexible with you as well (could work around a college schedule, another job).
  • Able to work independently: You can follow a checklist, take initiative for accomplishing tasks, research books for customers.
  • Skilled in Google Drive applications: A must!
  • A quick-thinking problem solver, with some basic tech skills: We use a number of different software applications and websites; it helps if you are adept at picking these up and handling some Microsoft troubleshooting as needed.
  • Friendly: Customer service experience is preferred. You will be assisting customers in person and via phone/email.
  • Excel in researching and written communication skills: You will be responsible for answering customer emails, reviewing and recommending books for industry publications, and creating posts for our website or social media (this one’s optional).
  • Able to stand/walk up to eight hours (with appropriate breaks), climb stairs, lift up to 50 lbs. as needed, use a dolly
  • Have an appreciation and respect for people of all races, genders, sexual orientation, socio-economic class, etc. Our motto is “Open books open minds”, and we expect our employees to be open-minded and respectful of all. As the only indie bookstore in Lee’s Summit, we believe we have a responsibility to have books that reflect everyone in our community

Bonus Points:

  • Experience with social media marketing would be a HUGE plus, or even being willing to learn and help keep up with posting to our accounts.
  • Experience working with Visual Anthology software, or working in a bookstore or library would be helpful.
  • Willing/able to participate in our book clubs, and/or, to lead a new book club/workshop/kids’ class of your choice (we are open to ideas from the right person)

Most important: You must LOVE books. You must READ books. You must be PASSIONATE about putting the right book in the right person’s hand.  You must be willing to read a wide variety of current and upcoming books in all genres and age ranges. We all have our favorites, of course, but all our booksellers must be at least familiar with titles in all categories to best recommend them to customers.

Now for the perks! Let’s be honest, you’re not going to get rich working in an indie bookstore. Our pay is modest, but we do have some fun bonuses. As a KD’s bookseller

  • You get FREE Books! As a bookseller, you will be set up with industry accounts and have access to ARCs (advanced reader copies) from publishers. Many books are available in digital, print, and/or audiobook format, and available 3-6 months ahead of publication so you have time to read and review (and recommend which ones we should order!).
  • After 30 days of employment, you’ll receive a monthly book credit, and a discount on all store purchases (not including items taken on consignment).
  • Our booksellers are welcome to host events in our event space for FREE (dependent on scheduling)
  • We value your input. We are always experimenting with what works for us, as a business and as part of the Lee’s Summit community, so to that end we love to get feedback from our employees and implement solutions and best practices you may have used elsewhere.
